Australia GST Calculator Guide

In Australia, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a value-added tax of 10% on most goods and services sales. GST is applied at each stage of the supply chain, with businesses collecting GST from customers and remitting it to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Adding GST (calculating GST-inclusive price)

When you need to add GST to a GST-exclusive price:

  • GST amount = GST-exclusive price × 0.10
  • Total price (GST-inclusive) = GST-exclusive price × 1.10

Example: If an item costs $100 (excl. GST):
GST = $100 × 0.10 = $10
Total = $100 × 1.10 = $110

Removing GST (calculating GST-exclusive price)

When you need to find out the GST-exclusive price from a GST-inclusive amount:

  • GST amount = GST-inclusive price ÷ 11
  • GST-exclusive price = GST-inclusive price ÷ 1.10

Example: If the total price is $110 (incl. GST):
GST = $110 ÷ 11 = $10
GST-exclusive price = $110 ÷ 1.10 = $100

Why ÷ 11?: Since GST is 10% of the GST-exclusive price, it's 1/11 of the GST-inclusive price (because $100 + $10 GST = $110, and $10 is 1/11 of $110).

GST for Businesses in Australia

If you're a business in Australia, here are some key points about GST:

GST Registration

You must register for GST if your business or enterprise has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 or more for non-profit organizations).

Business Activity Statement (BAS)

Registered businesses must regularly report and pay GST to the ATO using the Business Activity Statement (BAS), typically on a quarterly basis.

Input Tax Credits

When registered for GST, businesses can claim input tax credits for the GST included in the price of goods and services they purchase for their business.

Tax Invoices

For purchases over $82.50 (including GST), you need a tax invoice to claim an input tax credit. The invoice must include specific information, including the seller's ABN and the GST amount.
